7. QUEEN OF THE KIHEI

Clang-clang, the clock rang.

Ding-dong, the clock rang.

Bong-bong, the clock rang.

Seeming bored, she opened her eyes.

Her long, long black hair slipped over her bare shoulders.

She sat up, surrounded by countless clocks. The ringing marked a time of no particular importance. The fated day was still to come. But despite all of that, at last, she chose to stand.

The closer the fated day came, the less she could move. Now was the only time to fulfill her desires, even if only a little.

Just as she began to move, a fish-shaped kihei fell beside her and cried, “Her Highness is departing! Her Highness is departing! Her Highness is—!”

“Shut up.”

She snapped her fingers and destroyed the kihei, but the commotion spread rapidly.

Thousands of kihei churned in the darkness around her.

Her Highness is departing, Her Honor is departing.

She walked among cheers of joy.

Indifference weighed heavy in her black eyes, but her footsteps were light.

As light as those of one going to see their beloved for the first time in a thousand years.

“The Princess Series is a group of kihei boasting superior power, compared even to other Full Humanoid types. They are special… They were supposedly developed during prehistoric times for use in war.”

Kagura had responded readily to Kou’s question. Surprisingly, it didn’t appear to be confidential information. Kagura actually seemed to find it odd that Kou hadn’t asked earlier.

With a furrow between his brows, Kou repeated back the information he heard.

“…A prehistoric war?”

“Yeah, that’s just the Princess Series, though. We don’t know if that’s true about the other kihei as well. But it’s fairly likely they’re all prehistoric weapons. At least, that’s the hypothesis the bigwigs are going with.”

Kou blinked as he listened to this information. This was the first time any light had been shone onto the mystery of the kihei, although the information was nothing more than a theory.

And even if it was true, it didn’t change the current situation.

If they didn’t fight, they would die.

Kagura continued on with their discussion.

“So then, as for those with Princess Series Brides…”

It was break time now. The various members of Pandemonium were relaxing however they liked in the classroom. Hikami was dominating a few of their classmates in a board game. Mirei had her feet up on her Bride while she read a book. Tsubaki was curled up gracefully on Doll’s Guardian’s shoulder, sleeping. Yaguruma had his head down on his desk, one arm hanging limply to the side.

Kagura tapped the lectern with a finger, strumming out a little tune as he continued.

“Right now, we’ve got two teachers in contracts with a Princess, then when it comes to the students, there’s Sasanoe. That’s it. We were able to confirm six Princesses in total, based on information they provided us, but the fifth was destroyed, making her a permanent ‘lost number’… Oh, by the way, this is all confidential, so you know.”

“This was confidential?” asked Kou.

“Everyone in Pandemonium knows that.”

“Your definition of confidential is a bit loose.”

Kagura was the same as always.
